He hopes Congress absorbed the pope’s message that it’s time to work together

Sen. Joe Donnelly, one day after attending an address to Congress byPope Francis, called the Pontiff's words "an inspirational talk" and said it was a “wonderful thing to have him there.”

The senator was a guest on the Truth Radio Early Edition on Friday and talked about the inspired words of the pope’s appearance at Congress. Donnelly also praised the work of a guest he brought to hear the pope’s address, Sister Lawrence Ann Liston.

Donnelly called Liston a perfect representation of Hoosiers who care for other people. Liston ran a health center in Terre Haute that cares for the poor before she retired last year.

The pope touched on the golden rule of “do unto others” in his remarks, and Donnelly took that to be a direct message to Congress, urging them to work together. He called that a timely message as Congress prepares to enter the process of stopping another government shutdown.

Donnelly also mentioned that, while the president is open to handshakes and pats on the back, the rule Thursday for the Catholic leader’s entrance was, “Don’t touch the pope.”

Government funding is the most basic job Congress has, and Donnelly said the legislature is set up to accomplish that before the looming deadline. He further remarked, “Shame on anyone who stands in the way of that.”

Listen to the Truth Radio Early Edition from 6 to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday on Truth Radio 1340.
