Oh For Crying Out Loud (Addendum)

So…how was your Tuesday night, Chicago sports fans?

Derrick Rose news aside…and that was bad enough…the injury to Patrick Kane made Blackhawks fans take quick stock of their liquor cabinets Tuesday night. Word Wednesday morning is that it’s his clavicle. Another reporter says it’s his shoulder. Still another says it’s a broken collarbone.

Whatever it is, it’s six weeks…minimum. More likely, it’s ten weeks or more, putting a possible return for 88 deep in the playoffs.

So, now what?

For starters, you call up Teuvo Teravainen again from Rockford. Which they have done.

“He’s not a suitable replacement for Patrick Kane!”, you shout. And I agree. (Quit yelling at me.)

It was Coach Herman Boone in Remember The Titans who said “You cannot replace a Gerry Bertier.” The same is true of Kaner. There is no replacing one of the best players in the NHL. A guy who was on his way to possibly being the first American-born player to win the league’s scoring title. That’s right, it’s never been done.

The Hawks are third in the Central right now, chasing St. Louis and scrambling to stay ahead of the surprise Jets. The shootout win (don’t get me started about blowing another 2-goal lead) Tuesday night, expensive though it was, did pull the team out of it’s skid. Hopefully they can continue that when they face the Kane Killers again Thursday night in Sunny F-L-A.

Suddenly the trade deadline (Monday, 3 p.m.) seems important in Chicago again. But what do you do? Try to pick up another Forward? Prop up the defense? Trade Sharp & Raanta to get someone pricey, like Phil Kessel from the Leafs? They’re going to have to do something.

Stay tuned. And maintain your vigil. Losing Kane couldn’t have happened at a worse time this year.

Social media note: I have a new Twitter handle just for my purposes of following Blackhawks stuff, because it was becoming impossible to find anything other than Blackhawks stuff in my personal account. So, give me a Twitter follow if you like at @TommieHawks. I tend to follow back unless you’re selling something, and I livetweet games every once in a while. You should probably by 18 or older to follow me when I’m tweeting games, though. Especially if things aren’t going well.

Go Hawks!
